If you’re in the thick of adulthood, morning coffee has likely become a necessary ritual. However if you’re looking to support your metabolism, you can make small adjustments to your coffee for an added metabolic boost.
Firstly, I would like to mention that I proudly support some of the products in this article as an affiliate because I just LOVE them so much and want everyone to know they exist. I would not promote any product that I have not personally tried and loved.
These products include:
COFFEE – Locally roasted coffee is my usual, but on special occasions I get coffee from Koa Coffee or Hawaii Coffee Company. Both of these companies offer pure KONA coffee, which hits your taste buds in such a beautiful way. It’s always such a treat.
Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate– The lime green can is the kind that dissolves in liquids. This is the one I have used for years. It’s tasteless, mostly odorless, and easily digestible. The company has also ensured that this product is grass-fed & pasture-raised, kosher, paleo-friendly, and keto-certified. Read more about this product in my article The One Health Boosting Ingredient You Can Add to Almost Any Drink.
YETI Rambler – YETI’s 20 Oz Tumbler with magslider lid is suitable for either hot or cold beverages. If you’re one to sip your coffee slowly, this tumbler will keep it hotter longer so you’re not dumping precious black gold gone cold down the drain.
Ghee Butter – The secret ingredient that makes this recipe even more digestible is ghee butter. I find mine on Thrive Market. Pure Ghee is a lactose free clarified butter that contains butyric acid, a short chain fatty acid that can assist in digestion. The high saturated fat content can also assist in nutrient absorption which in turn can support a healthy metabolism.

So once you have your coffee brewed, you can try out my pro-metabolic coffee recipe below:
- Heat 1 cup of milk over medium heat, turn the heat down a bit if it begins to boil. You just want it to steam off the top.
- Once steam begins to roll off, add in the desired amount of sweetener. I personally use organic cane sugar or honey.
- Then whisk vigorously and it should start to build up a little foam layer.
- Add 1 tsp pure vanilla extract.
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate.
- Add 1 tsp ghee butter then whisk vigorously for about another minute.
- Fill ⅓ – ½ of the YETI tumbler with your freshly brewed coffee, then top off with the milk mixture.
Be cautious of it being too hot before drinking! Those YETI products really do their job.
Now one more thing while you enjoy your coffee.. I created this recipe based on the metabolic research of Ray Peat PhD. Functional Performance Systems does an excellent job collecting this kind of research on metabolism. In regards to my coffee recipe, I focus on balancing carbohydrates, protein, and fat. While fruits are of course the more ideal source of carbs, it’s still helpful to balance the sugar or sweetener in your coffee with healthy fat (milk, ghee butter) and protein (milk, Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate Powder). I would estimate that the 2 tablespoons of Collagen powder are about 10 grams of protein, (heaping would be 11-12 grams). Plus the milk contains protein.
“Carbohydrate (push blood sugar up) and protein (pulls blood sugar down) work synergistically to maintain blood sugar while fats help slow the entrance of protein and carbohdyrate into the bloodstream. This is why fat, protein, and carbohydrate consumption should be balanced within each meal to provide long lasting, stable energy (glucose) to cells. There also needs to be an emphasis on the right sources of protein, fat, and carbohydrate as all sources are not created equal.” -Functional Performance Systems
Something else you can also try is logging your daily food & drinks on the app Cronometer. They have a free version, but if you find that you love it and want to level up to track macros & other nutritional content, you can use my link to get 10% off the gold membership. Best of luck on your wellness journey my fellow coffee lovers!
