8 Tools to Discover Your Higher Calling or Life Purpose

People of all ages are still figuring out their life purpose. Before the Harry Potter series, Author JK Rowling was a single mother living on welfare. Tony Robbins was once a broke janitor in LA before landing his dream as a motivational speaker.  The amazing Oprah persevered through a challenging childhood and became an international superstar. The point is, you have a story and you have time to change your story. That story will drive your higher calling. As you read through this list, remember to keep an open mind and do your own research.

Basics First / Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Abraham Maslow created a five tier pyramid that describes our human needs.  This became a way to explain the stages of human fulfillment to reach one’s utmost potential.Self Actualization – awakening your best self, realizing your potential, seeking out peak experiences
Self Esteem – dignity, self-appreciation, independence, confidence, prestige, reputation
Love and Belongingness – friendship, family, being part of a group, trust, acceptance, relationships
Safety and Security – shelter, safety, stability, physical and financial security, free from fear
Physiology – food, water, air, sleep, warmth, light

Meditate Regularly
Create space for yourself. Meditation can happen intentionally or unintentionally. Wherever and whenever you can be presently aware in the moment is considered meditation. Even more helpful to discovering your higher calling is when you can intentionally ask yourself a few questions while you’re in this meditative space, such as: 

  1. How do I feel?
  2. What is my name? 
  3. What do I do best?
  4. What can I teach others?
  5. How do I make it happen?


Come Back To The Body
Exercising, breathwork, self care, etc. Do whatever you can to come back to your body. A personal favorite quote from Kate Northrup:  “Body before business.”
What this means is that we have to honor what the body needs as it sustains us throughout the projects we pursue in our life. She also quotes:
“If you don’t pick a day to relax, your body will pick it for you.” Listen to your body.

 

Interpret Your Birth Chart
Over the years, astrology and horoscope readings have become a mainstream thing. It might be time to take your reading to the next level. Astrology is a language all of its own, so be patient and persistent when grasping certain concepts. Self-reflection is most important. 

 

Be Creative
Creativity is a game of push and pull. It cannot be forced when you want it and it cannot be stopped when you don’t. Play with different creative projects until you find something that vibes with you. Creative projects can be anything from art, music, writing, to stamp collecting, feng shui, or cooking. Wherever you can find the feeling of “flow” is where the juices of life are.

Simon Sinek’s Start with Why and Find Your Why
These are books that you want to come to if you are searching not only for what your purpose is, but the “why” or reason behind that purpose. For example, if your dream is to start a non-profit that provides resources or support to mothers with postpartum depression, perhaps you or someone close to you had an experience with postpartum depression. What your purpose is will always be strengthened by your own story.

 

Listen to Motivational Speakers
Mel Robbins is my personal favorite these days. She will help you clear the clutter away and see right into what is holding you back. Facing these things head on can cause feelings to come up- which she believes is totally natural. It’s what you do next that matters most. 

 

Go on Retreat
Change the space, change the habits. Get out of your day to day routine every once in awhile. My favorite retreat center is Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health.  Nestled in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, you can stay as long or as short as you’d like. They offer programs with world renowned speakers, authors, public figures, as well as R+R Retreats. Named after Swami Kripalu, he believes that the highest form of spiritual practice is self observation without judgement. Give yourself an opportunity to look inward without holding yourself to expectations. Often this can light up areas of your life that you never thought to look. 

 

Being self-aware requires more than what you learn in school, college, life experience, etc. You can read all the self help books you want but it really takes a whole lifetime to grow your awareness. We will have dozens of teachers over our years, but it is our responsibility to keep learning.
